Who owns translation memories? And electronic glossaries?

FIT Europe, in conjunction with Asetrad, is pleased to announce that it will be holding a seminar on copyright, intellectual property and translation tools in Barcelona, Spain, on 13 October 2007. This workshop-encounter is intended for computer-aided translation (CAT) software users, i.e., professionals translating texts on engineering, law, economics, medicine or any other specialized field with the assistance of this type of tools.

In a very short period of time, the use of technology has changed our profession beyond all recognition. Software products that we hadn’t even heard of a few years ago have become indispensable everyday tools. And as is often the case, with change have come a series of attendant concerns. Who owns translation memories? And what about terminology databases? Is the question covered by copyright legislation? If not, should it be? Would that be of any use or would it succumb to the uneven distribution of market forces?

Seminar participants will include prominent representatives of today’s translation scenario, who with their contributions will attempt to find answers to these questions. Translation resource management in major international organizations, large corporations and translation agencies will be described and free-lance translators and representatives of several professional associations will also discuss their ideas.

Please have a look at the programme for more detailed information. You’re also encouraged to visit the Other activities page where you’ll find information on things to see and do in Barcelona, as well as on other events scheduled by Asetrad on 12, 13 and 14 October.
